A 2-Night Mount Rainier Itinerary from Ashford, WA
Why Ashford Is a Great Base for Mount Rainier
If you’re worried about getting the most out of a quick weekend getaway to Mount Rainier National Park, don’t be! Staying in Ashford is one of the most ideal locations when visiting Mount Rainier because of how incredibly close it is to the park’s entrance. Ashford is also unique in the way that the Nisqually Entrance is the only park entrance that is open year-round. Staying in Ashford gives you plenty of time to arrive, settle in, explore the park, and still enjoy a slow cabin morning.
Quick Trip Overview
Our recommended 2-night itinerary from Ashford, Washington would be the following:
Day one: Arrive and settle into your stay
Day two: Enjoy the park
Day three: Slow cabin morning and departure
Before You Go
Before heading into the park, it may be helpful to check road conditions, especially during the late fall, winter, and early spring months. While the Nisqually Entrance is open year-round, Mount Rainier does receive a significant amount of snow. The National Park Service provides camera views from Longmire, Paradise, and Sunrise so that you can view your parking and road conditions before traveling.
As of 2026, Mount Rainier National Park no longer requires timed entry reservations anywhere in the park, however, guests should still expect congested areas, especially around the park entrances during peak seasons. The National Park Service recommends entering the park before 10am or any time after 2:30pm. This helps avoid long delays during heavy visiting hours. Luckily, Ashford is only a few short miles from the entrance, but you may be surprised by how long the line backs up during the busy summer months. It can be helpful to plan your arrival to the park accordingly!
Day One
Whether you are traveling from Seattle, out of state, or even out of the country, we always recommend a light first evening after a long travel day. Ashford offers charming local places to eat that may entice you for the first night’s stay. Upon arriving at your destination, you may enjoy sitting on the porch, listening to a nearby creek, or enjoying the hot tub if your rental provides one. With a busy day of Mount Rainier adventures, we always like to head to bed early that first evening to get a jump start to a busy day ahead. If you’re looking for a nice evening walk near Ashford but outside of Mount Rainier National Park, you may want to visit the Ashford County Park. This 80-acre wooded park features a fully paved, flat, 0.4 mile loop of the Kent Mundell Memorial Trail and a 0.9-mile unpaved option. The Ashford County Park offers beautiful forests, wetlands, and a playground area.
Day Two
For your full park day, getting an early morning start is preferred, especially when visiting in the summer. You may consider stopping first at Longmire. This location provides guests with the Longmire Museum, historical buildings, restrooms, easy hiking options, and a slow introduction to the park before heading higher. Trail of the Shadows is a strong option if you want an easy, low-commitment walk. This loop features a 1888 Eclaine Longmire Cabin along the way, natural bubbling mineral springs, and open meadows. This loop is mostly flat and suitable for most ages.
Once you wrap up at Longmire and continue your way towards Paradise, you may consider stopping at Christine Falls and Narada Falls - both popular stops on your way towards the mountain.
Paradise is one of the most popular spots in Mount Rainier National Park. This area of the park includes incredible views of the mountain summit, meadows, visitor facilities, and trail access. There are plenty of hike options around this area. Whether you’re looking for a short meadow walk, a moderate hike option of the Nisqually Vista Trail, or a more ambitious option like the Skyline Trail, Paradise has it. Each hike gives guests incredible views that will truly take your breath away. One of the best parts about Paradise are the beautiful wildflowers it provides. Paradise is especially known for its natural summer meadow scenery and the Skyline Trail is one of the best ways to view it.
Remember to pack a lunch and snacks for your day in the park as there are no spots to eat past the entrance. Longmire and Paradise may have quick snacks on the go to purchase but we always find it the safest option to pack our own.
If you find yourself wanting more in the park after these stops, you could check out Comet Falls. This is a stunning 3.8-mile roundtrip hike towards a 320-foot waterfall. Another possible add-on to your day would be Reflection Lakes. This is a famous picturesque stop in the National Park and a great place when road access is open and conditions are good. Adding these stops to your itinerary would give you a full and busy day in Mount Rainier!
Day Three
On your last travel day and after a long day spent hiking around the mountain, it’s always a great idea to have a relaxing morning before heading home. If you’re staying at the Alpenglow, you could enjoy your morning coffee on our covered porch deck, enjoy the hot tub one last time, or venture your way down to the creek on the backside of the property.
